How to Play Mini Cross

Mini Cross is a free daily 5×5 crossword puzzle in a cyber terminal aesthetic. One puzzle per day from a rotating 90-puzzle pack — everyone gets the same puzzle.

Tips and Strategy

• Solve the short crossings first. Most entries in these grids run the full five squares, and the rest are the two- and three-letter stubs the black squares carve out. Those stubs are the cheapest letters on the board — every one you confirm feeds into a five-letter crossing and cascades through the grid.
• Use Check Letter sparingly. Each Check Letter costs 5 points off your 300-point cap, and Reveal Word costs 20. With a 2 pts/second decay, spending one Check Letter is worth ~2.5 seconds of pondering — only use it when you are genuinely stuck on a single crossing.
• Toggle direction by re-tapping the active cell. Click the same white cell twice to flip between Across and Down without leaving the cell — faster than arrow-keying around. Tab steps to the next entry in the clue list, across first and then down, whether or not it is already filled.
• Race the 2-pts-per-second decay. You start at 300 and bottom out at 10. A clean solve in under 90 seconds keeps you well above 100; sitting on a single clue past 30 seconds usually costs more than guessing wrong and backspacing.
• Build a streak. Every solve adds one to your streak counter, and the counter pays into every future score: +10 for each of the first 30, +5 for 31-60, +2 for 61-90, then +1 each beyond that. The puzzles rotate from a 90-puzzle pack, and the final score is uncapped — so loyalty compounds, but speed and clean solves still drive your daily leaderboard rank.

Controls

• Click/tap a white cell to select it. Tap the same cell again to toggle Across/Down direction.
• Type letters to fill the active cell; cursor advances automatically.
• Backspace clears the letter in the current cell, or steps the cursor back if that cell is already empty.
• Arrow keys move the cursor; Tab jumps to the next word; Enter toggles direction.
• On mobile, a virtual keyboard slides up — no native keyboard scroll issues.

Scoring

• Start at 300 pts. Lose 2 pts/second. Check Letter costs 5; Reveal Word costs 20.
• Streak bonus, added to every score: +10 for each of your first 30 solves, +5 for solves 31-60, +2 for 61-90, then +1 each. Minimum score is 10 and there is no upper cap.
• Hard mode removes the Check Letter and Reveal Word buttons from the board entirely and pays +50 on a solve.

What Makes Mini Cross Different

Most daily mini crosswords live behind an app install or a subscription prompt, and few of them score anything beyond a solve time. Mini Cross treats the five-by-five grid as an arcade event: you start at 300 points, the clock drains 2 points per second, and every Check Letter or Reveal Word spends real score — so a clean, fast, unassisted solve is a fundamentally better run, not just a faster one. The cyber-terminal presentation, with its virtual keyboard on mobile, keeps the whole thing playable in any browser with nothing to install and no account.

The streak economy is the long game. Solves compound a bonus that scales down in tiers the longer the streak runs, which rewards showing up every day without letting veterans lap new players on loyalty alone — speed and clean solving still decide the daily leaderboard.

The crossword itself dates to the early twentieth century, but the five-by-five "mini" is a modern invention: a deliberately small daily grid that trades the full puzzle's half-hour commitment for a one-to-three-minute ritual. The format exploded alongside the daily-puzzle wave of the past decade because it fits the same habit loop — one shared puzzle per day, a time to beat, and a streak to protect.
