The objective is to survive each sector and score as high as possible. Your ship turns and thrusts with momentum, so it keeps drifting after you let off the throttle — and you can keep firing while you drift. Collect every Vibe Core in the sector, then fly to the destination planet to warp out and advance. Boss encounters appear on every fifth sector — they take sustained fire to bring down and have distinct attack patterns.
- Desktop: Left/Right arrows to turn and Up (or W) to thrust, Spacebar to shoot, C for the shield, Shift for the afterburner
- Mobile: On-screen touch controls with a virtual joystick for movement and a fire button
The 4 Salvage Types
Not all pickups are worth the same. Destroyed asteroids and enemies scatter four distinct types of salvage, each worth a different point value:
10 points — The most common drop. Low value on its own, but it refines into 1 Vibe Matter at the Engineering Deck, which is how upgrades get paid for.
50 points — Mid-tier drop, and what Interceptors and Heavies leave behind. Worth 5 Vibe Matter refined, so it is worth prioritizing when it lands near your flight path.
250 points — Rare and high value; large asteroids, Giant Asteroids and dead bosses are the reliable sources. Worth 10 Vibe Matter refined, and the clearest opportunity for a scoring spike in a given sector.
1,000 points — The rarest drop in the game, and the sector objective: the destination planet will not let you warp out until you have collected them all. About one asteroid in twenty hides one, and Giant Asteroids are the best source.
Smart players learn to stay aware of what's on screen and route toward high-value targets while keeping the ship safe. Chasing a Diamond recklessly costs more in survival risk than the 250 points gains in score.
Boss Fights
Boss encounters mark the end of a run's major escalation points. Each boss has far more health than a standard enemy, runs its own scripted attack pattern rather than normal enemy behaviour, and requires sustained fire to defeat. The first boss appearance is a significant skill check — players who've been surviving passively will struggle. Players who've learned to position aggressively will find it manageable.
Between boss sectors, the enemy composition shifts. Drones come first, then Scouts, then Interceptors, then Heavies, each layered on top of the asteroid field, requiring you to manage movement and aiming simultaneously rather than treating them as separate problems.
Upgrades
Upgrades aren't dropped — you print them. Refine collected Silver, Gold and Diamond into Vibe Matter at the Engineering Deck (press P), then spend it on blueprints that install mid-flight. The most valuable during heavy sectors:
- Shield Generator (100 VM) — press C for ten seconds of invulnerability, then a sixty-second cooldown. Prioritize when enemies are closing in from multiple directions
- Triple Gun (50 VM) — adds a shot 15° either side of your main cannon, tripling your damage output permanently once installed
- Afterburners (20 VM) — hold Shift to burn fuel for 2.5× thrust, especially useful when flanked
Global Leaderboard
Space Destroyers has a global leaderboard. After a run, you can submit your score and see where you rank against other players. The leaderboard adds a competitive dimension that keeps high-score runs meaningful beyond personal bests — there's a target to beat.
Tips for High Scores
- Prioritize Vibe Cores whenever one appears. A single Vibe Core (1,000 pts) is worth one hundred Silver pickups — and you cannot finish the sector without collecting them all. Reroute your flight path to hit it.
- Use the tactical map. The camera is locked to your ship, so the screen only ever shows your immediate surroundings. Press M for the sector map, and print the Radar blueprint (75 VM) to put enemy positions and a compass to the remaining Vibe Cores on it.
- Collect salvage as it drops. Silver, Gold and Diamond only become upgrades once you have refined them at the Engineering Deck. If you see a drop and can reach it safely, collect it — don't wait for a "perfect moment" that may not come.
- Boss pattern recognition. Watch the boss for two or three attack cycles before committing to a chase. Most bosses have a predictable firing cadence — waiting for a pause before you advance is safer than rushing in mid-attack.
