Free Online Acorn Madness — Play a Free Squirrel Game in Your Browser
If you're looking for a free arcade game with a twist on the classic catching formula — no download, no account, playable right now — Acorn Madness is an arcade game about collecting and protecting. You play as a squirrel catching falling acorns in a three-lane world. The catch: collecting acorns doesn't score points. You have to bank them at the Home Tree on the far right — and there are three types of enemies between you and it.

Controls are simple:
- Desktop: Arrow keys to move left and right, up and down to switch lanes. Spacebar to jump. E to bury an acorn or dig one back up.
- Mobile: On-screen directional controls.
Acorns fall from trees in the world. Move under them to collect. Once you've collected what you're carrying, run right to the Home Tree — touching the trunk banks them automatically. Banked acorns become points. Acorns you're carrying when an enemy catches you are lost. The game has three lanes — foreground, mid, and background — and you'll move between them constantly to catch acorns and dodge threats.
What's in the Game
- 3 Enemy Types — Robo-Squirrels that hunt loose acorns and sprint off with them, hawks that swoop from above (growing from a distant speck before they dive), and a Lawn Mower that drives horizontally down one lane. Each requires a different response.
- Banking System — Collecting doesn't score; banking does. Only banked and buried acorns persist between levels. The core tension: wait to fill your carrying capacity or bank immediately and make more trips?
- Burying Mechanic — Press E near any ground spot to bury acorns underground where enemies can't steal them. Buried acorns carry over to the next level and can be dug back up later.
- Carrying Capacity Upgrades — Start with space for 1 acorn. Power-ups upgrade this to 3 or 5. More capacity means bigger banking runs — and more to lose if it goes wrong.
- Machine Gun Power-Up — Rare, but lets you eliminate Robo-Squirrels directly instead of evading them. Creates exceptional moments in the middle of the normal collection loop.
- Dynamic Weather (Wind Storms) — Acorns fall at double speed, and branches tear loose and drop into the lanes. More to catch and more to dodge at the same time.
The Burying Mechanic
Burying is the most distinctive mechanic in Acorn Madness. It encodes real squirrel behavior — squirrels bury acorns as a hedge against theft — and it adds a strategic layer between immediate scoring (banking) and deferred safety (burying). Buried acorns can't be stolen. They carry over between levels. And they can be retrieved and banked whenever you're ready.
Players who bury intelligently — banking what they can safely bank, burying the rest when a banking run is too risky — build reserves that last deep into the game. Players who ignore burying entirely have to bank everything immediately, which means more trips, more enemy encounters, and less flexibility when the Lawn Mower or a hawk blocks the route.
Why There Are Three Enemy Types
Each enemy type creates a different kind of attention demand. Robo-Squirrels require you to watch ground-level movement and plan your route. Hawks require you to watch the sky layer and respond quickly as the speck overhead grows into a dive. The Lawn Mower requires you to be aware of the current state of every lane, not just the one you're in.
Alone, each is manageable. Together — especially in later levels when all three are active simultaneously and a wind storm hits — they create compound situations where the right response to one threat puts you in range of another. That's where the real difficulty of Acorn Madness lives.
