About Acorn Madness

Go NUTS in this wild arcade adventure! Unleash your inner squirrel! You are the fastest squirrel in the park, and the Big Oak is dropping treasure. Dash, dodge, and leap to catch falling acorns, but watch out—evil Robo-Squirrels, hungry hawks, and the dreaded Lawn Mower are out to stop you. Can you survive the chaos and build the ultimate stash to reach the top of the Leaderboard?

What Makes Acorn Madness Different

Most catcher-genre games (think Catch-the-Egg, Feed the Ducks, falling-fruit clones) stop at a single axis: catch item, dodge enemy, repeat. Acorn Madness layers a burying mechanic on top: a cache in the ground is the only thing that survives a level change, so a good run is about what you hedge and what you sprint for. You're also juggling multiple hazard types — a Hawk diving out of the sky, the Lawn Mower grinding down a lane, Robo-Squirrels racing you for the same acorns — instead of one recycled enemy, plus wind storms that double how fast acorns fall and shake a lethal branch out of the Oak. No sign-up, no download, no paywalls. And when the hawk-dodging chaos gets to be too much, popping some virtual bubble wrap is the perfect zero-pressure cooldown.

The Origin Story

Acorn Madness started on a car ride. Squirrels kept darting across the road in front of the car, and the conversation with the kids turned into "what would a squirrel arcade game actually look like?" Hazards for the darting, weather because squirrels obviously care about weather, and burying because that's what squirrels are famous for. The sketch went to an AI coding agent, which built the first playable loop, and many sessions of iteration since then layered the complexity into the later levels — the Lawn Mower, the Robo-Squirrels, the wind storms and the Hawks each arrive a level or two apart.

How to Play Acorn Madness

For fans of Frogger-style lane-dodging arcade runs, Acorn Madness is free online and plays in your browser with no download. Acorns drop from the big Oak in the middle of the yard into one of three lanes. You run left and right along the ground, move between lanes with Up and Down, and catch acorns as they fall or scoop them off the grass before the Lawn Mower flattens them or a Robo-Squirrel hauls them away. Your squirrel starts able to carry one acorn, so the loop is tight: catch it, sprint to the Home Tree at the right edge, and step onto its trunk to bank it for a point.

Each level is a 60-second timer; when it runs out the yard is swept clean and the next level starts faster. You get three lives, and the Lawn Mower, a Robo-Squirrel, a diving Hawk or a falling branch each cost a life plus every acorn you were carrying. Press E while carrying to bury an acorn where you stand, and E again on the mound to dig it up — a cache is the only acorn that survives a level change. Power-ups drop on their own every 15 to 30 acorns from level 2: a pouch upgrade to three, then to five, then the Machine Gun from level 3. The hazards arrive on a schedule too — Lawn Mower at level 2, Robo-Squirrels at 3, wind storms at 5, Hawks at 6.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the controls in Acorn Madness?
Left/Right arrows run, Up/Down switch between the three lanes (or climb a trunk when you are in the back lane), Spacebar jumps, E buries a carried acorn or digs one back up, and F shoots once you have the Machine Gun. Banking is automatic: step onto the Home Tree trunk and everything you are carrying is scored.
What are Robo-Squirrels in Acorn Madness?
Robo-Squirrels are rival squirrels that race you for acorns — they hunt the loose acorns in their own lane and carry them off-screen, and touching one costs a life and every acorn you were holding. They never leave the lane they spawned in, so switching lanes with Up/Down is the reliable escape. They appear from level 3 and get faster as the levels climb; two Machine Gun shots stop one.
What hazards should I watch out for?
Besides Robo-Squirrels, dodge the Lawn Mower, which crushes acorns and squirrels on contact, and the Hawks that dive out of the sky from level 6. In a wind storm a falling branch is lethal on the way down and a solid obstacle once it lands. Getting off the ground helps: a jumping or climbing squirrel cannot be hit by any of them.
How does burying acorns work?
Press E while carrying an acorn to bury it where you stand, and E on the dirt mound to dig it back up. Buried acorns are safe from Robo-Squirrels and the Lawn Mower, and they are the only acorns that survive a level change — carried ones are dropped and loose ones cleared when the timer runs out. Burying does not score by itself, so dig the cache up and bank it next level.
What do weather events do?
From level 5, wind storms roll through the yard. Acorns dropped during one fall at double speed, and the wind shakes a heavy branch loose into a random lane — lethal if it lands on you, then blocking that lane until you jump it or the Lawn Mower shreds it. A warning shows while a storm is running.
Are there power-ups and a leaderboard?
Yes. Carrying Capacity power-ups let you hold 3 or 5 acorns at once, and the Machine Gun lets you shoot Robo-Squirrels, spending one carried acorn per shot. From level 2 a power-up drops on its own every 15 to 30 acorns you collect, in that order, and it stays with you for the rest of the run. Every run posts to the global Acorn Madness leaderboard — tap the trophy icon above the game to view it. No sign-up required.
