How to Play Kiln

Kiln is a production-chain idle game set in a pottery workshop. Your workshop runs six sequential stages: Dig, Dry, Shape, Fire, Glaze, and Sell. Each stage transforms raw material from the previous stage into something the next stage can use. Raw clay is dug from the earth, dried to remove moisture, shaped into greenware, fired in the kiln to produce bisque, glazed for finish, and finally sold for coins. The whole chain only runs as fast as its weakest link.

You start with seven workers and a fixed allocation: two workers on the Dig stage and one on each of the remaining five. Watch the buffer fill-bars beneath each stage card. A nearly empty bar means that stage is starved — material is not arriving quickly enough from the upstream stage. A completely full bar on a stage means that stage is backed up; the downstream stage cannot accept output fast enough. The solution in both cases is to move a worker: pull one from a full stage and place them on the hungry stage. Workers move instantly, so bottleneck diagnosis and correction happen in seconds.

The Sell stage is the most important: it converts glazed pieces directly into coins. More workers on Sell means faster coin income, but Sell can only work as fast as the Glaze stage feeds it. The entire chain is an exercise in balancing throughput — no single stage can outpace the others indefinitely.

Coins fund upgrades across four branches. The Quarry branch accelerates clay digging and enlarges the raw clay buffer. The Kiln branch speeds the firing stage and unlocks a fuel saver. The Market branch increases sell speed and adds periodic price surges. The Labour branch adds extra workers to your pool, giving you more flexibility to staff the whole chain. Upgrades are permanent within a run.

Once you earn 500 lifetime coins, the Reset Kiln button activates. Pressing it lets you choose one permanent multiplier from three options: Quarry Mastery doubles dig worker output from the very start of the next run; Kiln Wisdom extends the offline accumulation cap from four hours to eight, meaning longer absences pay bigger dividends; Market Acumen boosts sell coins per piece by fifty percent permanently. After choosing, your coin count and all purchased upgrades reset, but the multiplier stays and stacks with future prestiges up to five times. Each reset makes subsequent runs noticeably faster.

Closing the tab does not stop production. Kiln calculates how much each stage would have produced in the elapsed time and adds it to your buffers when you return — up to a maximum of four hours offline (eight hours with Kiln Wisdom). A brief notice tells you how many minutes of production were collected. Plan your play sessions accordingly: a well-allocated chain that runs overnight for four hours arrives at a full sell buffer and a significant coin pile by morning.

Tips and Strategy

Early game, prioritize the Dig and Sell stages. Dig produces the raw material that feeds the entire chain; an under-staffed Dig stage starves everything downstream. Sell converts your entire production into actual coins; a slow Sell stage lets glazed pieces pile up and stalls the Glaze stage behind it. Two workers on Dig and two on Sell from the start will outperform any other split until you have enough workers to staff every stage evenly.

Buy the Labour upgrades as soon as you can afford them. An extra worker unlocks more configuration options and smooths out the hardest bottlenecks. The third Labour upgrade brings your total pool to ten, which is enough to staff every stage with at least one worker and still have spare capacity to double up on whichever stage is the current chokepoint.

When deciding which prestige bonus to take, think about how you play. If you open Kiln frequently throughout the day, Market Acumen rewards active sessions the most. If you prefer long offline runs overnight, Kiln Wisdom's extended cap means you accumulate more during each absence. Quarry Mastery shines in later prestiges when the entire chain is upgraded and the Dig stage is the only remaining bottleneck at high worker counts.

Watch the fill-bars closely during the first thirty seconds of a new session. Each bar tells you the current state of the upstream buffer feeding that stage: a full bar means the stage ahead is overproducing, while an empty bar means that stage is waiting. In a well-tuned chain every bar should hover around fifty to seventy percent — high enough that a brief slowdown does not immediately starve the next stage, low enough that no single buffer is wasting capacity. If you see the Dry bar consistently full while the Shape bar is empty, move a worker from Dry to Shape. If the Fire bar is full while Glaze is empty, do the same. Treat every full-upstream, empty-downstream pair as a direct signal to transfer one worker.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does production work in Kiln?

Each stage converts its input into output at a rate set by how many workers you assign. Move a worker away from an overflowing stage toward the empty one to clear the bottleneck and keep the chain flowing.

What happens when I close the tab?

Production continues for up to 4 hours while the tab is closed. When you return, Kiln calculates offline production and adds it automatically. A notice tells you how many minutes were collected.

When can I prestige?

The Reset Kiln button appears after you earn 500 lifetime coins. Choose one permanent multiplier: Quarry Mastery (faster digging), Kiln Wisdom (longer offline cap), or Market Acumen (more coins per sale).

Do upgrades survive a prestige reset?

No — coins and upgrades reset. Only your chosen multiplier carries forward and stacks on subsequent prestiges (up to five times), making each run faster than the last.

How is my score measured?

Your leaderboard score is total lifetime coins earned across all prestige runs this session. It never resets between prestiges, so more play always means a higher score.

What is the fastest way to earn the first prestige?

Focus all upgrades on the Labour and Market branches first. Buying Labour 1 gives you an extra worker to double up on the Sell stage, which directly doubles your coin income. Market 1 then boosts Sell speed by fifty percent. Together these two upgrades can cut your time to 500 lifetime coins in half compared to buying Quarry or Kiln upgrades first. Once you unlock the Market 2 price surge, coin spikes every five minutes can push you over the prestige line quickly.

Why is the Sell stage always starved at the start?

At the start of a new run every buffer is empty, so the production chain has to fill from front to back before Sell receives any input. Dig fills the raw clay buffer, which lets Dry start, which feeds Shape, then Fire, then Glaze, and finally Sell. This initial fill-up takes about ten to fifteen seconds with the default worker configuration. Once the chain reaches steady state the STARVED label on Sell disappears and coins begin flowing. If Sell is still starved after a minute, move a worker from Dig (which has two) to Fire or Shape — those stages are likely the real bottleneck.
