How to Play Recall

Recall is a modern take on the classic Concentration (memory) card game. A grid of face-down cards is laid out in front of you, each pair sharing a unique symbol. Tap any card to reveal its symbol, then tap a second card trying to find its match. If the two cards share the same symbol, they stay face-up for the rest of the game and you score points. If they don't match, both cards flip back after a short pause — but you now know where those symbols are, so remember them.

Modes

Classic gives you unlimited time to clear the entire board. Your final score combines base match points, combo bonuses, an efficiency bonus for low move counts, and a small penalty for each hint used. Classic is the purest test of memory.

Sprint starts a 60-second countdown the moment you flip the first card. Score as many matched pairs as possible before time runs out. Uncleared pairs at time-up do not cost you anything — only matches score. Sprint scores appear on the shared leaderboard.

Chain removes the difficulty selector and instead starts you on a 4×4 Easy board. Each time you clear the entire board, the board grows by two more pairs (up to 18 pairs maximum), and you earn a chain clear bonus. Play continues indefinitely, growing harder with every chain level.

Combos

Match two pairs in a row without a mismatch in between and you start building a combo streak. The third match in a row earns +50 bonus points, the fourth +100, the fifth +150, and any streak of six or more earns +200 per match. A single mismatch resets the streak. Building combos is the key to high Sprint scores — efficient players who rarely mismatch outpace lucky ones by a wide margin.

Hints

Press the Hint button (or the H key) to reveal all unmatched cards face-up for 1.2 seconds. You have 3 hints per game. Use them wisely: each hint costs 50 points at game end, and they are not replenished across chain levels. The hint counter is shown in the top-right of the HUD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Classic, Sprint, and Chain modes in Recall?

Classic mode gives you unlimited time to match all pairs on the board, rewarding near-perfect play with an efficiency bonus. Sprint mode starts a 60-second countdown and lets you score as many matches as possible before time runs out. Chain mode grows the board by two pairs every time you clear it, rewarding endurance and sustained concentration.

How does the combo system work in Recall?

Every consecutive successful match in a row adds to your combo count. The first two matches in a streak give no bonus, but from the third match onward, bonus points increase: +50 for a 3-combo, +100 for 4, +150 for 5, and +200 for any streak of 6 or more. A single mismatch resets the combo to zero.

What does the Hint button do and is there a penalty for using it?

Pressing Hint (or the H key) flips all unmatched cards face-up for 1.2 seconds, then flips them back. You get 3 hints per game. At game end, each hint you used deducts 50 points from your final score, so hints cost you the combo bonus of one good match.

How is the efficiency grade (S/A/B/C) calculated in Classic mode?

The efficiency grade compares your total moves to the theoretical minimum (one match per turn, equal to the number of pairs). An S grade means you matched nearly every pair on the first try, while a C grade means your move count was more than twice the minimum.

Does Sprint mode submit scores to the leaderboard?

Yes. Only Sprint mode submits your score to the Recall leaderboard at the end of each game. Classic mode tracks your best clear time locally in your browser, and Chain mode tracks chains cleared locally.

Can I play Recall on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Recall is built for tap and click — cards respond to touch with the same flip animation as mouse clicks. The card grid auto-sizes to fit your screen so all cards are fully visible.
